Shy Building, 13 Story Residential Lofts - This
thirteen story concrete frame building located in downtown Los Angeles was converted to
residential Lofts. Design services included state-of-the-art seismic retrofit, addition of
two new mezzanine levels, converting two basement levels into parking. Several heavily
loaded existing concrete columns were removed to make room for parking. |
Masonic Temple Lofts - Built in early 1900,
this seven story structure was converted to residential lofts. Two brand new seven story
towers were added on each side of the exiting structure connected to the existing
building. Design services include state-of-the-art seismic retrofit of the exiting
structure, design for the new structures on either side of the existing building. |
Pine Villa Alf - This eight story
non-ductile concrete frame building was converted to assisted living units. Design
services include state-of-the-art seismic retrofit of the exiting structure, design for
the new structural elements and extensive remodeling. |
US Naval Hospital, Oakland CA - BQE
performed Seismic Analysis using 3D dynamic analysis software to determine the performance
of this precast concrete building standing nine stories high in the city of Oakland,
California. The building was built in 1968. |
Cooper Arms
Apartments, Long Beach CA - In 1992 BQE was awarded an "Excellence
in Structural Design" by the Consulting Structural Engineers Society for the
seismic retrofit design for the Cooper Arms building. The challenge in the design was to
maintain the historic fabric of the building while strengthening it for future ground
shaking. The entire design was completed using 3D computer analysis. |
Holiday Inn
hotel, Santa Monica, CA - This 10 story luxury hotel has been
designed to withstand a higher level of earthquake forces by using a Performance Based
engineering design concept. BQE also managed the construction of the seismic retrofit
phase of this project. |
Farmer and
Merchants Bank, Long Beach, CA - This 12 story non-ductile concrete
frame building was designed for the 1940 El Centro earthquake. The retrofit was limited to
strategic column jacketing and one concrete shear wall along the back elevation of the
building. BQE was involved in the redesign of this project and was able to save the owners
over 1.8 million dollars in construction costs. |
Saint Regis
Apartments, Long Beach, CA - First of its kind, this historic
landmark building was designed to withstand larger ground shaking. This design involved
use of sophisticated computer analysis resulting in a economical design. BQE contributed
towards the development of guidelines for strengthening the non-ductile concrete frame
building (Div 95) utilizing the design experience from this project. |
Blackstone
Hotel, Long Beach, CA - This non-ductile concrete frame building
with masonry infill was analyzed and designed using a three dimensional dynamic analysis. |
Long Beach Water
Department, CA - This four story concrete frame and concrete shear
wall building has a concrete lift slab at all levels. The building was analyzed using the
"Performance based" design criteria and the goal was to keep the facility
operational after a strong ground motion. |
Malaga Cove
Plaza, PVE, CA - This historic landmark located in the city of
Palos Verdes Estates is built using unreinforced masonry. BQE utilized its innovative CenterCore technology to strengthen the building without
disturbing the current tenants. |
Fullerton
Police Department, Fullerton, CA - This historic landmark building
was designed to resist strong ground motions. The design is currently in progress. A PML
study was also performed. |
City Hall
Building, Fullerton, CA - BQE Inc. was chosen by the City of
Fullerton to retrofit the main City Hall building. The contract was awarded based on our
expertise in the field of seismic strengthening and our well known state-of-the-art
computer analysis capabilities. A PML study of the building was also performed. |
Cabrillo
Square Apartments, San Diego, CA - Located in the heart of downtown
San Diego, this fifteen story high rise residential building with a five story parking
structure went through a detailed probable maximum loss (PML) analysis. BQE has been
awarded the complete retrofit to the tower using the performance based engineering. |
Georgian
Hotel, Santa Monica, CA - An historic 8-story steel
frame and reinforced concrete Hotel with hollow clay tile interior walls. Structural
inspection report prior to Northridge Earthquake predicted behavior and performance of the
building during the January 17th, 1994, Northridge event. |
Chapman
Building, Fullerton, CA - Located in the heart of downtown
Fullerton, this historic landmark was strengthened to resist larger ground shaking. The
steel frame building was analyzed and designed using a three dimensional computer analysis
software. A PML analysis was also performed for the former owner. |
Jet Rag retail
center, Los Angeles CA - This famous retail center located at the
825 N La Brea Avenue was designed by Keith Greco. For this project Keith choose to create
an avante grade design featuring a series of bombs thrusting through the windows. BQE Inc.
did the structural design and retrofit for the building. The design challenge was highly
recognized by the engineering community and earned a four-page article in the Modern Steel
magazine in Feb 1998. (See Bombs Away) |
Armani of
Santa Monica, CA - Located at 185 Pier Avenue in the City of Santa
Monica, this historic building housed the famous Armani store. BQE Inc. was responsible
for the seismic retrofit of this historic landmark. |
